AMD Instinct: From MI300X to Helios and the Gigawatt Deals
Tech industryAI acceleratorsAMDData center GPUs
AMD introduced the Instinct MI300X in June 2023 and made it available in December, then moved to an annual accelerator roadmap spanning MI325X, MI350, MI400 and later series. Cloud deployments expanded from Azure and Oracle to production inference at Microsoft and Meta, while AMD launched the MI400 series and Helios rack-scale systems in July 2026. OpenAI, Meta and Anthropic have announced commitments for up to 14 gigawatts combined of AMD GPUs, but their initial deployments are largely still ahead; AMD said MI450 production shipments were set to begin in the third quarter of 2026, with revenue stepping up in the fourth quarter and first quarter of 2027. AMD reported $6.7 billion in second-quarter 2026 Data Center revenue, which includes EPYC as well as Instinct, and the central question is how quickly the announced GPU commitments convert into operating systems, recognized revenue and supply capacity.
