TL;DR

Google introduced Gemini in December 2023 as a multimodal family with Ultra, Pro and Nano sizes, then made long context central to Gemini 1.5 and established Flash as its lower-cost, lower-latency tier. Gemini 2.5 added “thinking” models, but Google subsequently retired the 1.5 and 2.0 API generations and moved latest-model aliases to Gemini 3. The Gemini 3 cycle has increasingly been led by successive Flash releases: Gemini 3 Pro Preview was shut down, Gemini 3.5 Pro has not shipped, and Google has continued to release newer Flash and Flash-Lite models instead. Google’s newest high-capability offering is Gemini 4 Argon, now generally available with cyber guardrails on the public endpoint, while access to an unguardrailed version remains limited to Fairwind Program defenders.

  1. Announcement

Agentic video understanding reaches general availability

Google announced that agentic video understanding was generally available. The announcement stated that the capability had reached general availability.

    • Google AI for Developers · Oct 13, 2026 · Agentic video understanding is generally available: Agentic video understanding is now generally available.

Editor's note: Google’s cited Gemini API page states that agentic video understanding is now generally available. The page was last updated 2026-10-13 UTC.

  2. Launch

The million-token limit turns out to be unified, not a million tokens of output

The million-token limit turns out to be unified, not a million tokens of output
Image: Source: Google · source · editorial use

At general availability Google described Argon’s headline number as "an industry-leading 1M unified input-output token limit via the Gemini API", and pointed developers to a new continuation protocol for working within it. The announcement two weeks earlier, recorded on this page, had described the same million as the model’s output-token limit, raised from 64,000. A unified million that input, reasoning and output all draw on is a much tighter envelope than a million of output on top of whatever was sent in, and nothing in either post reconciles the two descriptions.

    • Google · Oct 13, 2026 · This is enabled by an industry-leading 1M unified input-output token limit via the Gemini API.

Editor's note: The tension is between Google’s own two posts, not between a source and this page. The 30 September post says "expanding the model’s output token limit to an industry-leading 1M tokens, up from the previous 64K tokens" (#1781); the 13 October post says the limit is unified input-output. Both are quoted as written and neither is corrected here.

  3. Update

Google puts Argon on robots and claims 87 percent on the embodied-reasoning benchmark

On the day Argon went generally available Google also published its robotics case for it, and the claim is that no separate robotics model is needed: the same general-purpose model scores 87 percent on the Embodied Reasoning benchmark “using pure reasoning”, which Google says beats every other frontier model. The post walks through robot control, reconstructing calibrated simulations from camera feeds or hand-drawn sketches, and self-improvement, including Argon building a MuJoCo twin of a foot-pedal bin to rehearse before working a Boston Dynamics Spot on the real one. It is Google’s own benchmark figure, not an independent result.

    • Google · Oct 13, 2026 · You can see this leap in capability on the Embodied Reasoning (ERQA) benchmark, which tests a model's ability to understand and solve physical, spatial problems in 3D environments. Using pure reasoning, Argon scores 87%, outperforming every other frontier model.

Editor's note: From Google’s developer blog, dated OCT. 13, 2026 and bylined Kanishka Rao; it is the post deepmind.google/models links to as "Gemini 4 Argon for Robotics". Google publishes no number for any competitor here, so the comparative claim is reported as Google’s own.

  4. UpdateKey moment

Gemini 4 Argon opens to everyone, and the Fairwind version is the one without guardrails

Google made Gemini 4 Argon generally available on 13 October, giving "developers, enterprises, scientists, and consumers" access to the endpoint gemini-4-argon, thirteen days after announcing it as a rollout to a set of trusted cyber defenders. The same post expands that original programme too — "hundreds of additional Fairwind Program partners" — and makes plain that the two are not the same model: cybersecurity defenders can apply to Fairwind for Argon "without cyber guardrails", while the public endpoint keeps them.

    • Google · Oct 13, 2026 · We’re giving developers, enterprises, scientists, and consumers access to our latest frontier model.
    • Google · Oct 13, 2026 · We’re giving developers, enterprises, scientists, and consumers access to our latest frontier model.

Editor's note: Cited to Google’s own announcement rather than the release note. An earlier version of this entry recorded that Google had published no blog post for the general availability; that was wrong. The post exists at /introducing-gemini-4-argon/ and is dated 13 October, but deepmind.google links only to the 30 September post at /gemini-4-argon/, and the blog index did not surface the newer URL.

  5. Update

Argon’s introductory price gets an end date, and the flagship ships with no free tier

Google’s announcement footnotes the end of the introductory rate this page recorded on 30 September: from 1 December 2026, after the introductory period expires on 30 November, Argon costs $4 per million input tokens and $20 per million output tokens — double the launch price. The footnote adds that this "applies to the Argon model intended for public access only". The pricing page shows the same schedule for context caching, $0.10 doubling to $0.20 with implicit caching only, and lists no free tier for Argon at all, where Gemini 3.8 Flash is still free of charge.

    • Google · Oct 13, 2026 · After the introductory period expires on November 30, 2026, the price of $4 per 1M input tokens and $20 per 1M output tokens will apply. Applies to the Argon model intended for public access only.

Editor's note: Re-cited from the Gemini API pricing page to the dated announcement footnote, which states the same schedule and will not roll over once the date passes. The free-tier comparison is from the pricing page, read on 16 October 2026.

Questions this timeline answers

Each one is an ordered set of dated entries, most of them from this page, with a line on why each step led to the next.

Where sources disagree or fall silent

  • Google has not announced whether or when Gemini 3.5 Pro will ship. Reporting cited in the timeline says it faced internal performance delays, while Google’s releases have continued to favor Flash models.
  • Google described Argon’s limit at launch as one million output tokens, then described it at general availability as a one-million-token unified input, reasoning, and output limit; the sources do not reconcile those descriptions.
  • Google deprecated Gemini 3.1 Flash Image without announcing a shutdown date.
  • It is unclear whether the scheduled end of Gemini 3.7 Flash’s introductory price will have practical effect, because Google has deprecated that endpoint and automatically routes its requests to Gemini 3.8 Flash.
