Tesla Robotaxi and Cybercab: From the 2019 Promise to Driverless Rides
Tesla’s robotaxi plan began with Elon Musk’s 2019 prediction of more than one million robotaxis by 2020, a target that did not materialize. Tesla instead launched a small paid Austin service using Model Ys with in-car safety monitors in June 2025, then began limited rides without monitors in January 2026 and expanded service to additional metros.
