- OpenAI and Broadcom: 10 gigawatts of OpenAI-designed accelerators from late 2026 to 2029 Announcement
OpenAI said it would design its own accelerators and systems, with Broadcom developing and deploying racks connected over Ethernet, starting in the second half of 2026 and completing by end-2029. The 10 GW figure put OpenAI's custom chip program on the same scale as its Nvidia and AMD agreements announced in the preceding weeks.
on Custom AI Silicon at the Hyperscalers: TPU, Trainium, Maia, MTIA and the OpenAI–Broadcom Chip - Broadcom books $10 billion of orders from a fourth custom-chip customer Financial
On its fiscal third-quarter call Broadcom said a fourth XPU customer had released production orders worth $10 billion, with shipments starting in fiscal 2026, and raised its AI outlook; the stock rose 9 percent the next day. Analysts assumed OpenAI, but Broadcom's chip president later said it was not, leaving Anthropic's Ironwood racks as the likely order. Broadcom's known XPU customers at the time were Google, Meta and ByteDance.
