What led to Intel's 18A launch?
A roadmap, a fab, a customer and a product — and one number that never arrives. Gelsinger's IDM 2.0 in March 2021 committed Intel to keep manufacturing in house and to spend about US$20 billion on two Arizona fabs; the Intel Accelerated roadmap that July named five nodes in four years, ending with Intel 18A in 2025 and introducing RibbonFET and PowerVia; and Fab 52 and Fab 62 broke ground at Ocotillo that September. In February 2024 Intel relaunched the business as Intel Foundry and Microsoft committed a design to 18A. The first 18A products, Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest, powered on healthy in August 2024 alongside PDK 1.0 for customers, and Fab 52 ran its first 18A wafer in April 2025. In October 2025 Intel unveiled Panther Lake as the first 18A product and said it would begin ramping high-volume production at Fab 52, with the first SKU slated to ship before the end of the year. Core Ultra Series 3 was unveiled at CES in January 2026 and 18A-P entered risk production that June. What no entry on this timeline records is Intel confirming that volume: the October statement is a plan, the January entry is an unveiling, and the closest thing to independent confirmation is a measurement of the silicon itself — SemiAnalysis putting Panther Lake's 18A compute logic and TSMC N3E GPU logic at similar density, which is parity rather than a lead.

- 4Intel Foundry and MicrosoftAnnouncement
Intel Foundry launched as a systems foundry; Intel 14A unveiled; Microsoft commits a design to 18A
At its first Foundry Direct Connect event Intel relaunched the business as Intel Foundry, combining technology development, manufacturing and foundry services, unveiled the 14A node beyond 18A, and had Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella say Microsoft had chosen a design to be built on Intel 18A.
Intel Newsroom (archive) ·
Intel also unveiled its new process roadmap featuring Intel 14A, an all-new process node, and a range of process node evolutions designed for foundry customers.
Why it matters here. Relaunching as a systems foundry and having Microsoft commit a design to 18A gave the node an external customer, and the next entry reports the first silicon for it.

Intel 18A powers on first client and server chips; PDK 1.0 released to customers
Intel said the first 18A products, the Panther Lake client chip and Clearwater Forest server chip, had powered on and were healthy, that 18A remained on track for production in 2025, and that the 18A Process Design Kit 1.0 had been released in July so outside customers could start designs.
Intel Newsroom ·
Intel 18A powered on and healthy, on track for next-gen client and server chip production next year.
Why it matters here. Panther Lake and Clearwater Forest powering on healthy, with PDK 1.0 released to customers, showed 18A working in products before the next entry puts a wafer through Fab 52.
